Oxfords, not Brogues. The Tread+Miller Experience.

Tread + Miller HR-45It was this weekend past, while watching a documentary on Iris Apfel that a quote stuck in the back of my mind: ‘If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything’ and that’s so true. The aptness is especially relevant as I’m only cottoning on to Tread+Miller (rather late to the party than not at all) and their recently launched Canal Walk store. For those of you not in the know, Tread+Miller is a curated heaven for men (and the people who shop for them) with not just an impressive range of stylish and fashionable footwear but also accessories that include bags and belts and a collection of popular socks in a choice of sophisticated colours and contemporary motifs (their new moustache designs are on-trend for the #Movember craze sweeping our Mother City so if you are follicle challenged like many a hipster – this is a great way to stay on-trend and lend your support to a worthy cause!).

“We love collaborating with our local producers and we were impressed with their timeless, stylish designs – every hat is well crafted and simply incredible,” says Candy Swart, Tread+Miller Marketing Manager. “They do not only have the design credentials we look for but Simon and Mary has a 70-year history as a family business similar to Cape Union Mart which originated in 1933 with the Army & Navy Store just off Greenmarket Square.”

As part of this collaboration with Simon and Mary, Tread+Miller houses three designs in shades of black, grey, navy and olive. The Simon and Mary brand is a brand loved by local influencers who understand style, most notably friends Trevor Stuurman (StuurmanStyleDiaries), Laduma Ngxokolo (of Maxhose fame) and Maps Maponyane, the Johannesburg-based milliner has been on nearly every other fashionable head in South Africa since Dean Pozniack joined the family business back in 2008.

The industrial-modern décor is more in tune with NYC’s Williamsburg or the Lower East and even London’s’ Hackney and brings back to South African retail something that has been missing for a long, long time: personal service through their in-store shoe-shine service and by training their staff who are always an elbow away to help you find and fit the right pair of shoes or if you hate the idea of shopping malls (living in Jozi will do that to you!) there is an easier option using their simple to navigate and informative online shop that ensures anything between seven to ten working days door-to-door deliveries and comes with detailing you would expect of long established international fashion brands: Tred+Miller wrapping paper and a personal not which makes it seem that much more than simply a pair of shoes. And speaking of the shoes, they offer a wide range be it Crockett&Jones, Sebago, Cushe, Caterpillar, Adidas, Superga, Sperry and Arthur Jack (their own in-house footwear label).

It would seem that emerging powerhouse Jenna McArthur PR has the cream of the hottest brands this year with the launch of Tread+Miller’s new Canal Walk store (amongst others around Mzansi). Follow Tread+Miller on Instagram (@treadandmiller) or Twitter (@Treadandmiller) for their latest campaigns and new collections. You won’t regret it.
