It was this weekend past, while watching a documentary on Iris Apfel that a quote stuck in the back of my mind: ‘If your hair is done properly and you’re wearing good shoes, you can get away with anything’ and that’s so true. The aptness is especially relevant as I’m only cottoning on to Tread+Miller (rather late to the party than not at all) and their recently launched Canal Walk store. As part of this collaboration with Simon and Mary, Tread+Miller houses three designs in shades of black, grey, navy and olive. The Simon and Mary brand is a brand loved by local influencers who understand style, most notably friends Trevor Stuurman (StuurmanStyleDiaries), Laduma Ngxokolo (of Maxhose fame) and Maps Maponyane, the Johannesburg-based milliner has been on nearly every other fashionable head in South Africa since Dean Pozniack joined the family business back in 2008.
The industrial-modern décor is more in tune with NYC’s Williamsburg or the Lower East and even London’s’ Hackney and brings back to South African retail something that has been missing for a long, long time: personal service through their in-store shoe-shine service and by training their staff who are always an elbow away to help you find and fit the right pair of shoes or if you hate the idea of shopping malls (living in Jozi will do that to you!) there is an easier option using their simple to navigate and informative online shop that ensures anything between seven to ten working days door-to-door deliveries and comes with detailing you would expect of long established international fashion brands: Tred+Miller wrapping paper and a personal not which makes it seem that much more than simply a pair of shoes.
