Ever new, Evergreen. The Poetry SS’17 Experience.

Taking their cue from spring’s fresh bounty, the architectural lines of tropical plants and vibrant colours, Poetry has put together a spring/summer collection that pays tribute to the season of new growth.

“We envisioned a greenhouse filled with greenery and flowers in full bloom, a sense of calm in the midst of our chaotic lives,” says Mari Lochner, Poetry Buyer. “As days get hotter and we enter high summer, we increasingly want clothes that are comfortable, feminine and above all effortless.”

“We also noted the growing resistance to previous seasons’ focus on fast fashion and heeded shoppers’ demand for quality items and classic cuts that will last for many seasons to come.”

Therefore, the cuts and styles are classic and made fashionable by vibrant tropical prints and stripes. For added interest and greater visual impact, these bold colours are contrasted with muted tones in items such as the Cassey Lace Shift Dress and Pippah Tunic Linen Dress. In addition, the collection uses pure cotton and linen as well as non-synthetic fabrics such as Tencel, Modal and Cupro. “For good measure, we have included a few textured fabrics too,” says Mari.

Evergreen silhouettes have been made new and Poetry’s A-line dresses have been given a slight flare. Coordinated top-to-toe looks are back too, but in 2016 this means feminine shapes with bold stripes, carefree off-the-shoulder tops and a touch of boho. But it’s not all footloose and fancy-free, Poetry has catered for formal occasions too with feminine lace dresses, striped maxi dresses and off the-shoulder embroidered dresses. There are brush-stroke prints and coordinated separates, all of which are more than a match for Poetry’s signature leather jackets.

For those who are more fashion forward, Poetry has modern pull-overs, printed tops and check blouses, as well as their brand new denim jeans, called Danielle.

The collection is held together by its focus on the lifestyle, values and interests of Poetry’s customer, who searches out fashion that allows her to always look her best without any fuss, artifice or inconvenience.

“Think of Poetry’s clothes as the indispensable supporting act that allows you to do what you really enjoy, whether it’s travelling, savouring a new book by a favourite author, spending time with your dearest friends or simply winning at life,” says Mari.

There is a range of accessories for dressing up, or down, the clothes and for creating a variety of looks. The season’s shoes and sandals are geared for summer and there are wedges, classic and tassel sandals, block heels, lace-ups and this summer’s hottest sandal, espadrilles. The footwear like the clothing can be dressed up or down. Tassel brogues, camel loafers and the collections wedges are easy wearing and transitional from day to night.

Poetry has introduced its first range of silky soft, hand illustrated scarves this season. The classic square shapes evoke the heyday of young Hollywood with stars such as Sophia Loren and Bridget Bardot escaping to the French Riviera. A beautiful, bright scarf remains a timeless accessory and can be worn as a neckerchief, belt or head cover. Tied to a handbag they add colour and panache to any outfit.

Poetry’s costume jewellery has stepped up a notch. The new range is more polished and several items sport semiprecious stones, most notably rose quartz, one of Pantone’s colours of the year.

Bags range from weekender bags, which are now available in leather too, and a shopper that has been given a new shape and a modern update, which comes in black and brown. Poetry produces 90% of their leather bags in South Africa.

In addition, there is a variety of straw hats and belts – plain, embossed, plaited, black, brown, and tan to finish off an outfit.

On the home front, Wonkiware’s popular range of duck egg and summer blue ceramics are back. This season they are joined by a range of Portuguese handmade black ceramics – ovenproof and microwave-safe bowls, platters, roasting dishes – and a hand-painted Portuguese espresso range that is a contemporary take on terracotta.

Elsje Burger’s fresh blue ceramics have an elegant pure gold rim and are perfectly suited for formal occasions and milestone celebrations.

Other décor items include mercury glass lanterns, candleholders, jewellery boxes, mother-of-pearl and carved wood picture frames, trivets, trays and crisp white and blue tablecloths and napkins. The collection offers homeware for every style – white, clean and minimalist pieces in contrast to the bold, matte black and statement homeware.

There are even metallic pieces for the daring décor lovers.
