“Every turning point in a person’s life isn’t reached by luck, they choose to be successful, they know what it takes to be there, they can do what is expected of them to do, they do not show trepidation about the requirements needed to be on top.” These words best sum up the remarkable woman who is Barbara Lenhard (@), philanthropist and founder of Chefs who Share and the driving force behind Opulent Living, the brand which celebrates the finer things in life which recently expanded its epicurean supremacy with a dazzling new Opulent Living Concept Store & Gallery on uber-hip Kloof Street.
Much like the high streets of popular European cities, Kloof Street has become one of Cape Town’s most celebrated design quarters, and the beautiful old building at No 24 has been remodelled under the expert guidance of top interior designer Sarah Ord. Renowned for her bold and cosmopolitan interiors, Ord’s designs for the Opulent Living Concept Store & Gallery features walls in striking emerald green, offset in places by rich sapphire blue. “It’s the perfect fit for our brand,” says Opulent Living co-founder, Barbara Lenhard. “I have always loved Sarah’s work, and we are so excited to have worked with her on this important project.”
The gem-like interiors showcase the key pillars of the Opulent Living brand: lifestyle, art and travel. Besides paintings and sculptures from both well-established and upcoming South African artists on display, unique and luxurious lifestyle items are available and presented in a different shopping experience. “We are sourcing and choosing products which we feel fit under the umbrella ‘the finer things in life’ and we are excited and proud that from handbags and jewellery to selected fashion items and opulent gifts – all under one roof to tickle the fancy of the discerning customer. It’s all about accessible luxury, we have curated a covetable mix that I feel will appeal to a vast range of shoppers” explains Barbara.
With the dream of creating a high-end travel and lifestyle publication focussing on Southern Africa, Opulent Living was established seven years ago when Barbara Lenhard and partner, Florian Gast, moved from their native Germany to Cape Town. The magazine soon established itself in the luxury market. The couple’s entrepreneurial spirit has since taken the brand beyond publishing into the luxury travel business with Opulent Living Travel, Opulent Living Cruises, as well as into high-end event planning, the Opulent Living Experiences division.
Early 2016, Barbara and Florian decided to discontinue the print of the magazine and are now concentrating their efforts on the other well-established divisions of the brand. With the Opulent Living Concept Store & Gallery, the creative couple has established something extraordinary and colourful with a brand which is now even more accessible to its consumer.
“It’s long been my dream to have a concept store that could showcase some of the amazing art, destinations and products on offer, particularly from the inspiring African continent,” says Barbara, who once owned a retail store in Germany. “This new store brings the key ingredients in our brand together in one beautiful, opulent space that celebrates the best of lifestyle, art and travel – simply the finer things in life.”
The Opulent Living Concept Store & Gallery has opened its doors on the 1st of November 2016 and customers can expect to discover a range of exclusive items in various price ranges. These include handcrafted jewellery from ANPA, known for its custom-made contemporary designs, and the Legacy Collection, which uses pieces of the original fence from Robben Island prison. Exquisitely crafted handbags from luxury ostrich leather house, Mvari, as well as colourful creations from the Italian-made Save My Bag range. Beautiful Taunina bears, each handmade and embroidered by local women, will grace the shelves, too. There’s also designer menswear from British fashion label Grays London, established in 1927, recently launched in South Africa, as well as the colourful women’s wear collection, Resort, accessories from Oh Voila! and Endless Jewelry. A bespoke range of Opulent Living lifestyle products will be launched and customers will be treated to exquisite items. Works by prominent South African artists, Jean Doyle, Jimmy Law, Marieke Prinsloo, Richard Scott, Michaela Rinaldi and German-born wildlife art photographer, Klaus Tiedge, are currently on sale.
Art is an important element of the concept and little events and special functions are planned and already in the pipeline. Says Barbara, “We will present items of the highest quality where the founder or creator is still involved in the process of production. Everything, really everything, is of highest quality and there’ll be lots of opulent surprises. I so look forward to welcoming all and wish to create a destination which will be liked by local and international visitors.”
